Amanda Tan

Guzheng Teacher Amanda Tan

A born-and-bred Singaporean, Amanda first started learning the piano at a tender age of 4 and subsequently had her first touch with Guzheng at 10 years old when she joined her primary school’s Guzheng ensemble. Since then, she has had more than 10 years of performing experiences on both local and international platforms, with various ensembles and orchestras including the National Taiwan University of Arts Chinese Orchestra and Ding Yi Music Company.

Through her experiences, Amanda firmly believes that every musician has their own unique learning and musical style. Hence, her teaching pedagogies focus on tailoring her lessons to each student’s needs, and she aspires make her lessons meaningful to her students.

As an undergraduate, Amanda joined the NUS Chinese Orchestra, where she was appointed vice president and principal Guzheng musician as a recognition of her musical, teaching and leadership skills. She graduated from NUS with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, and was awarded the Tan Ean Kian Arts Award for her contributions to the performing arts scene during her undergraduate days.

Being a collaborative musician who embraces cross-genre collaborations, Amanda has a keen interest in exploring other art forms – she holds an ABRSM Grade 8 in both piano performance and music theory, does musical improvisation, is a contemporary dancer and has performed in the Chingay Parade in 2014-2016. Under the tutelage of Ms Indra Chen, Amanda was a finalist in the 2020 Singapore Chinese Music Competition – Guzheng Solo (Senior) Category.
