Cheong Yi Heng started learning the sheng at the age of 13 in Victoria School under the guidance of Mr Tony Ang Ding Leong. He continued learning the sheng under Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s resident sheng players, Mr Ong Yi Horng and Mr Guo Chang Suo, and additionally studied the chuantongsheng. He later served in the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company (MDC) during his National Service days as a resident sheng player. In 2010, he participated in the National Chinese Music Competition organized by the National Arts Council and emerged as the champion in the Open Category for sheng.
Yi Heng often performs with community Chinese Orchestras in Singapore, and is a founding member of Resonance (合笙), the sheng ensemble.
