Rebecca Tan, a passionate composer in Singapore, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music (Composition) from the esteemed Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). Under the guidance of Dr. Zechariah Goh, she honed her skills and nurtured her creative spirit. From an early age, Rebecca’s musical journey was shaped by a diverse range of influences. Her exposure to Western Classical music, as well as her deep connection to Chinese Traditional music, instilled in her a rich appreciation for both genres.

Immersed in the world of music, Rebecca delved into the practice of Western and Traditional Chinese music by learning the piano and becoming an integral part of the Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School (Primary) Guzheng Ensemble. During her time at Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC), she eagerly joined the Concert Wind Band, discovering how to play the Euphonium and expanding her musical repertoire. Her dedication and experience propelled her to become a member of NAFA’s Symphonic Wind Band during her years in the Diploma programme.

Music has been a constant presence in Rebecca’s academic journey as well. She exhibited her commitment by undertaking both Normal and Higher GCSE ‘O’ Level Music examinations and subsequently enrolling in ACJC’s H3 Music Elective Programme (MEP). Through these platforms, she delved deep into Music Theory, Composition, and developed essential research skills. Exploring the realm of Sound Design further enriched her understanding of music and sonic texture.

Rebecca’s thirst for knowledge led her to seek guidance from esteemed mentors in the field of composition through various Composition Programmes. She had the privilege of learning from Dr. Chihchun Lee, Professor Michael Sidney Timpson and Dr. Catherine Kontz, whose expertise enriched her artistic development.

In addition to composing scored music, Rebecca has collaborated with notable figures in the local music scene. Working alongside composer Phang Kok Jun and Sound Artist Dayn Ng, she crafted immersive Sound Designs for interdisciplinary performances. Her talents were also sought after by local Game Designer Jay Wong Shi Qi, for whom she created music used in ‘SEDAP!’.

Recent endeavours have seen Rebecca actively involved in composition and arrangement projects with seasoned musicians such as Reverberance, Dicapella and various small ensembles. Her compositions have been showcased by NAFA students and alumni, as well as the renowned School of the Arts (SOTA) Large Fusion Ensemble. A notable milestone in her journey was her participation in the Choral Collective Residency Programme 2022/23 by Vox Camerata, where her first choir work premiered alongside eight other remarkable compositions.

Rebecca’s musical odyssey continues to unfold as she explores new horizons equipped with a diverse scope of interests and experience.
