James embarked on an extraordinary musical journey, culminating in remarkable achievements. He completed his Diploma in Music Performance at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), studying under the guidance of Wang Fang Liang.
His dedication and talent propelled him to attain the bronze award at the Hong Kong 1st International Chinese Music Competition. Additionally, he clinched the 3rd prize at the National Chinese Music Competition Open Category, organised by the esteemed National Arts Council.
Immersing himself in the vibrant music scene, James became a member of both the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra and the NAFA Chinese Ensemble where he was the Erhu Principal Player in 2005 and 2008 respectively. His prowess earned him an invitation to perform the captivating Jinghu and Percussion Duet, “A Night’s Thoughts”, at the inaugural SNYCO Chamber Music Recital in 2008. Throughout the years, James has been a frequent guest performer and has performed with Chengsan Chinese Orchestra, the Foochow Association Chinese Orchestra, the Hsing Hai Chinese Orchestra, and the Nanyang Polytechnic Chinese Orchestra.
