Amanda Toh - Erhu Teacher

Meet Amanda Toh, a young award-winning Singaporean musician who is not only a pro at playing the Erhu, but also an amazing teacher. She’s got a knack for understanding the unique needs of each students so as to tailor her lessons to suit their learning styles. Additionally, she is fully conversant in English, Mandarin and Spanish, so language barriers will never be an issue. Amanda started learning the Erhu at the tender age of 9 under the tutelage of renowned SCO erhu musician Shen Qin. After a year, she achieved third place in the junior category of the National Chinese Music Competition (NCMC). She subsequently honed her craft and was awarded first place in the Youth category of the NCMC in 2018 and Senior category of the Singapore Chinese Music Competition (SCMC) in 2020. In 2022, she was pronounced Champion of the Grand Category of the SCMC after her astounding performance of Liu Wenjin’s piece “The Brave Spirits of the Snow Mountain”. Furthermore, she garnered the highest number of votes, clinching the “Audience’s Choice Award” and becoming the first SCMC participant to win both awards. On the international stage, Amanda has clinched first place in the the Junior category of the Dunhuang Cup-NAFA Singapore International Erhu Competition in 2019 and third place in the Open category in 2022.

For her notable achievements, Amanda has been invited to share about her Erhu journey and competition preparation on Capital 958 FM’s radio show on two separate occasions. In 2019, she was chosen by the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra (SNYCO) to attend the Hong Kong Youth Music Camp. That year, she was also selected to play a concerto piece “Chusong” accompanied by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO). In 2022, she was appointed as Section Principal of Erhu and in 2023, she was appointed as Co-Concertmaster of the SNYCO.

Amanda is passionate about sharing her knowledge of the Erhu and contributing to the development of the Chinese Music scene both locally and internationally, having collaborations with music producers from Canada, Israel and Italy.
