Gu Yiqi is a warm and patient Pipa teacher who believes that learning a musical instrument should be an enjoyable and encouraging experience. Her lessons are filled with support, and she has a keen eye for identifying the specific difficulties students face during practice, offering clear guidance to help them make progress quickly. She is bilingual in English and Mandarin, ensuring that students from different backgrounds can fully understand every concept.
Yiqi began her Pipa journey at a young age under the tutelage of experienced local Pipa educator, Mr. Lin Ye. Through Mr. Lin’s dedicated guidance, she built a solid technical foundation and successfully achieved Grade 9 with Distinction and Grade 10 with Merit under the Central Conservatory of Music NAFA examination system.
Beyond her examination achievements, Yiqi is an active performer. She was invited to serve as the lead player for the renowned piece “Ambush from All Sides” with the Marsiling Chinese Orchestra at the Esplanade. She has also performed at various community events, including a solo performance of “Dance of the Golden Snake” at Woodlands Regional Library, and an ensemble performance of “Send Me a Rose” at the Yishun National Day Dinner. These rich stage experiences have given her a deep understanding of musical expression and stage presence, which she brings into her teaching.
Although Yiqi has not been teaching for a long time, she has already begun working with students as a practice coach. She deeply understands the frustrations and obstacles that non-professional students face during practice. Because she has been through the same journey herself. For her, besides solving technical problems, it is even more important to nurture students’ interest and help them stay motivated. She believes that passion is the best teacher. Therefore, she is happy to spend time getting to know why each student enjoys the Pipa, starting from their points of interest and encouraging them to play and explore more. So that practice becomes something they truly want to do, not just a chore.
