Are you ready to have some fun while learning music? Meet Ong Wei Da, your new music teacher! He is incredibly patient and meticulous, making sure you understand every concept before moving on. With his positivity and enthusiasm, every lesson is a blast! And with his bilingual abilities, he can conduct lessons in both English and Mandarin, so a language barrier will not be a problem.
Wei Da began his journey on the Yangqin from the tender age of 8. Under the tutelage of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s Yangqin Principal, Ms. Qu Jian Qing, Wei Da has gone on to achieve great success on his musical journey. Actively participating in the local Chinese Orchestral scene, Wei Da was a member of the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra from 2015 – 2021, and is a volunteer musician with The Purple Symphony as well.
With the support of the National Arts Council, Wei Da attended a 2-week training program at the Central Conservatory of Music in April 2018 under Professor Liu Yue Ning. This has helped him deepen his understanding of the Yangqin and its music. A humble recipient of the Performing and Visual Arts Scholarship administered by NUS, Wei Da has also represented NUS and Singapore at the 17th ASEAN Youth Cultural Forum held in Laos, sharing about local arts and culture.
Wei Da’s passion for music is evident in his dedication to mastering the Yangqin, and he is sure to inspire and entertain audiences for years to come.
In 2014 and 2016, Wei Da clinched the 1st Prize in the National Chinese Music Competition’s Yangqin Youth and Open Categories respectively. He also achieved a distinction for his Diploma in Yangqin performance conducted at the NAFA-CCOM Chinese Instrumental Examinations in 2017.
Wei Da has also achieved 2nd Prize in the Singapore Chinese Music Competition (SCMC) Ensemble Category in 2020, and subsequently went on to win 1st prize in the SCMC Ensemble Category in 2022.
